In any moment, big or small, we find a split second to take that extra breath. Breathing can focus our minds (meditation), boost our immune system, and give us that last bit of confidence before we jump into the next journey. Over the years, I have done meditation and breathing exercises sporadically, but recently have been doing box breathing. I had a recent minor surgery, and during the procedure, I did my box breathing, and it really had an impact on me. Now, I find myself doing it automatically when I am in a stressful situation. It really re-centers me, calms me, and helps me focus.
According to Dr. Myerholtz in her “Take a Deep Breath” article, breathing kick-starts the parasympathetic nervous system by stimulating the vagus nerve through diaphragmatic (abdominal) breathing. These breathing techniques can be helpful for panic, stress, and anxiety, and can be done anywhere.
Box breathing is simply inhaling for 4 seconds through the nose, holding the breath for 4 seconds, releasing the air slowly for 4 seconds, and holding again for 4 seconds. Going through this cycle about 4 times really clears your mind.
With this all being said. Let’s breathe…and jump into this adventure together, into a new world of research, exploring the natural world of herbs and science, and of course, fun stuff like recipes.
